Only small horizontal and vertical shifts have been noticed, while changing the interocular spacing and most people naturally tend to try and move the eyepieces apart or closer together as they would with a standard pair of binoculars. This is a very intuitive mechanism that is a pleasure to use. (See Figs. ) The main reason why I chose curved spider vanes (Fig. 17) was for viewing believability. I believe that visual astronomy needs to project a believable view to truly engage your mind. If you look through most standard telescopes, you will almost always see moderate to large size diffraction spikes caused by the straight spider vanes.

From an extremely dark sky location, the background space appears almost jet black with a refractor. Through a reflector, it appears a dull gray. This is why most expert opinion equates a refractor to a reflector of larger aperture in terms of comparing their performance. A faint star is readily distinguishable on the black background of a refractor but can easily get lost in the scattered light of a reflector. It is also one of the main reasons why dedicated planetary observers, who are obsessed with contrast for whom contrast is everything, are willing to spend thousands on incredibly refined and well-corrected refracting telescopes instead of hundreds on reflectors that have significantly larger apertures.
