Do so, and live well. Defy him, and live badly. The Bible has a name for people who cannot accept the awesome God: fools. Doesn’t that name apply perfectly to anyone who cannot accept the basic reality that God is in charge and wants his creatures to treat each other with compassion and fairness? This word appears many times in Proverbs, and it never refers to mental deficiency but to moral weakness. As we read through some of the best proverbs, keep 1:7 in mind: wisdom and right behavior are rooted in the wise and perfect God.
